Common questions
What is the difference between an IRF and an LTCH?
An inpatient rehabilitation facility provides intensive rehabilitation, usually about three hours of therapy a day, for patients who can take part. A long-term care hospital treats patients with complex medical needs who still need hospital-level care over a longer stay.
Does being listed mean a facility is good?
No. It means Medicare certifies the facility, according to the CMS file. It is not a quality rating. Use Medicare Care Compare and ask the facility questions.
Does Medicare pay for inpatient rehab?
Medicare Part A may cover inpatient rehabilitation when the patient meets Medicare's requirements, with deductibles and coinsurance. Medicare Advantage plans may need prior authorization. Confirm with the facility and the plan before admission.
Can I choose the facility?
Hospitals must give patients a list of available post-acute providers that serve the area and fit the patient's needs, and must respect patient preferences. Ask the discharge planner for the list and whether the hospital has any financial interest in the facilities on it.
Do you take fees for referrals?
No. Facilities can buy a flat-fee featured listing, labelled as such. We never charge per referral, patient or admission.
